This is about as simple as a build gets while still looking intentional — a good first project once you’ve outgrown your dirt shelter.

Step 1: Lay the floor

Mark out a 5x5 square and lay planks across the whole base. This gives you a clean floor and a clear footprint for the walls.

Step 2: Build the walls

Go up 4 blocks on all four sides, leaving a 1-wide, 2-tall gap on one side for the door. Add glass panes on two of the walls for windows.

Compact Farm

Farmland only stays hydrated within 4 blocks of water, so the shape of this layout isn’t arbitrary — it’s the largest square a single water source can fully cover.

Step 1: Dig the water channel

Dig a cross-shaped trench through the middle of a 9x9 area and place your water source in the centre. Water spreads outward automatically to fill the channel.

Step 2: Till the surrounding soil

Use a hoe on every remaining block in the 9x9 area. Anything within 4 blocks of the water (which this whole layout is) will stay hydrated permanently.

Watchtower

A tower isn’t just decorative — height gives you visibility over your base and the surrounding terrain, which makes spotting mobs (or players, if you’re on a server) far easier.

Step 1: Lay the base

Mark out a 4x4 footprint and build straight up 16 blocks. Keep the walls solid — this build’s strength is in being a simple, unbroken column.

Step 2: Add a ladder

Run a ladder up one interior wall from bottom to top. It’s slower than stairs but takes up far less interior space, which matters at this footprint.

Mini Castle

A full castle sounds like a huge project, but scaled down to an 11x11 footprint it’s a weekend build, not a server-defining one — and it still reads unmistakably as a castle from a distance.

Step 1: Lay the foundation and outer wall

Mark out an 11x11 square and lay a cobblestone foundation one block down, then build the outer wall up 5 blocks in stone brick. Leave a 2-wide gap in the centre of one wall for the gatehouse entrance.
